  • What could have been for some on the last round of Daytona 500 turned out to be perfect for William Byron

Daytona Beach, Florida – Denny Hamlin thought he was in the right place in the last round of Daytona 500 on Sunday. Cole Custer saw an opportunity. William Byron recovered the checkered flag.

Byron went from the seventh to the first on the backstretch when he slipped by crushing cars to win the Daytona 500 for the second consecutive year.

The contact between Custer and Hamlin sparked the incident that changed the result of the race.

Daytona Beach, Florida – A look at the winners and the losers of Daytona 500 on Sunday evening.

“At the end of the day, you push and push and pushing the side as hard as possible to win the Daytona 500,” said Custer after finishing 21st.

“… I would have liked to have waited for a few more corners (to go for the head), but I had such a big race of (Chase Briscoe), I decided to take it on the backstretch. I just need to look at the replay closer to see if I am written too hard or if I am a little hit on the back left or anything. Something was too much.

“I absolutely talked about it to Tom because I want him to do the project, and we want to be part of it if it had to happen.”

Hamlin said he had timed a race to make a Austin Cindric pass for the Tour 2, putting Hamlin in position, at least for a while, to win his fourth Daytona 500.

“I had him in a vulnerable place where he was not going to be able to block,” said Hamlin about Cindric. “I went high thinking:” Ok, the race comes from the upper side, let me climb up up there and control this. »»

Custer followed Hamlin, then darted the upper way after a briscoe push.

“(Custer) came with such a big race,” said Hamlin, who ranked 24th. “… it was going to be good for one of us, but it did not end well either.”

Joey Logano defended his move and said that a late block from Ricky Stenhouse Jr. had triggered the incident.

“I just said to him, from the experience I had in these races, you have to go down (turn) 4, then you can turn left, do everything you have to do, contact”, said Hamlin. “It’s just that I thought a little too early, but not everyone will do it as I would. He dodges an accident of the last blow to become the youngest driver with several victories in the great American race.

Byron said on Monday after looking at the reruns of the last round, he had a better idea of how he succeeded.

“When I had the chance to look at him, it made much more sense in my head of what happened, then see the camera by car,” he said. “… I moved to go on the third way and expect the Tour (turns) 4 and to see the crash and to be somehow against the wall and to cross was a good time suddenly on. “”

After cleaning the accident, Byron kept at high speed to beat Tyler Reddick for the victory. NASCAR only put caution after Byron crossed the finish line. With the Backstretch accident and the nearby emergency equipment, Nascar allowed the race to end under Green, knowing that cars would slow down after crossing the finish line.

“Honestly, I think if I had checked (before arrival), I think Reddick would have reached me and probably exceeded me,” said Byron.

  • What Rick Hendrick said about Beating the Daytona 500 victories record as the team owner

Daytona Beach – While Nascar was waiting, then waited a little more, for almost four hours behind Daytona 500, Rick Hendrick returned home in North Carolina.

He didn’t know, he would need to come back early enough.

The 75 -year -old was watched on television like William Byron, driver of the No. 24 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet, slipped around a last blow accident and obtained his second large consecutive American race while the chronometer approached 22 Hours, the victory made Byron the youngest multi-time champion and solidified Hendrick as the most victorious owner in the history of the race.

Its organization now has 10 Daytona 500 victories, one more than small businesses, which held the record forever.

So Hendrick jumped again on the plane and returned to the center of Florida on Monday morning. He attended the official celebration of the championship at Daytona International Speedway.

And he recalled his first Daytona 500 as a team owner in 1984.

“When I introduced myself and I saw Bud Moore and the Pettys and Junior Johnson and all these idols that I watched on television and on the racetrack, I did not think I should be here,” said Hendrick. “I didn’t feel like I was in this room.”

Geoff Bodine led the Chevrolet n ° 5 for Hendrick’s then racing operation that day. He finished ninth.

Two years later, Bodine put her Monte Carlo in Victory Lane. Hendrick has claimed nine since, including the last two.

Each of the last six victories of the Daytona 500 team came in two: Jeff Gordon and Jimmie Johnson in 2005 and 2006, Matt Kenseth and Johnson in 2012 and 2013, and the rehearsal of Byron.

“And now, to have 10,” said Hendrick, “we were lucky to have big drivers, great team leaders and large teams.”

Gordon, the organization’s vice-president, won three of 10 of these 10 car number as Byron. He spoke to Hendrick by phone after Sunday auditors.

“It blows his mind when he really comes back and thinks about it,” said Gordon at the press conference after the race. “But it is also in his mind that he likes to raise the bar and likes to be n ° 1. It is certainly something he said (beforehand) -” guy, let’s get n ° 10. ” “”

    Mission accomplished.

  • Why can’t Kyle Larson win the Daytona 500? Jeff Gordon thinks that defeats “get into his head”

Daytona Beach, Florida (AP) – Owen Larson called him when he said that his father would not win the Daytona 500 because “he probably needs to try very hard because he is not good in superspeedway Racing. “

The 10 -year -old man was right in his assessment. Kyle Larson can win anywhere in any type of car. But with regard to Daytona and Talladega, the champion of the Nascar 2021 Cup series is a disaster.

Larson fell at 0 for 22 at Daytona International Speedway – it is 0 for 42 in the Cup series once Talladega Superspeedway statistics are included – when he finished 20th in Daytona 500 on Sunday evening.

The Associated Press was integrated into the Hendrick Motorsports n ° 5 team with a headquarters in the front row for its 201 frustrating towers in which Larson complained above his radio that “I make all the bad movements. Any movement I make is the bad.

His exacerbation only went up when his three Hendrick teammates led Tours, William Byron won for a second consecutive year, and Byron and Alex Bowman finished inside the Top Six. Chase Elliott was 15th.

Jeff Gordon, vice-president of Hendrick Motorsports and triple winner of Daytona 500, did not dispute the concept of Larson not to be able to navigate properly in the typical pack race of Daytona International Speedway.

“I noticed this,” he said about Larson’s statement that he couldn’t make a single blow. “I can be hard with him because I like Kyle and I think he is incredible.”

Larson is incredible and opened 2025 with a multitude of victories, including in sprint cars in Australia, Chile Bowl and the Volusia Speedway at the head of Daytona 500.

But, just as his eldest son had predicted it, he was a non-factor in Daytona despite all the efforts of the motivation team, Cliff Daniels, tried his driver. The two have been twinned since Larson moved to Hendrick and team n ° 5 in 2021 and won 10 races and the title of the Cup.

Larson has won 23 cutting races since his move to Hendrick, and for that, leadership at Hendrick is able to give him a pass on his difficulties in Superspeedways.

“My God, the guy is not perfect,” said Gordon, but added that his difficulties have now become greater than not being able to feel confident in Daytona or Talladega.

“I think now I’m starting to see that it is putting in his head. I had some conversations with him, and like: “Dude, go ahead, forget him, don’t even try to think too much”, “said Gordon.” I don’t know what advice to give him otherwise than- Everything I said to him today is “just be Kyle Larson. Success.

Byron quickly pointed out that not winning the opening race of the season little means for Larson in the big scheme of things. The following month includes Cup races in Phoenix, where Larson won the race to win the 2021 championship, and Las Vegas, where two of his three career victories won the last three visits to the desert track.

“Wait until we arrive in Vegas, and he will tear himself away,” said Byron.

Larson’s difficulties in Daytona could be attributed to its early XFINITY series on the track. He sailed in the fence and destroyed his car in a scary accident for a driver who had skyrocketed Sprint Cars at the highest level of racing in the United States. Although he won the Xfinity race in 2018, he was never really a factor in Daytona 500, where he fell at 0 for 12 in “The Great American Race”.

Larson thinks that his CV in career would be well without a victory by Daytona 500. He won all the other jewels of the Crown: the Nascar stars race in 2019, 2021 and 2023; 2021 Coca-Cola 600; 2023 Southern 500; and 2024 Brickyard 400.

“Like, I’m not going to lose sleep if I never win this race, but I always want to win the race and have this ring and this trophy and be one of the names that won it”, Larson says. “But again, I think there are a lot of others, much more that takes place in victory and a lot of luck. This is not a big problem.

Gordon said Larson and Daniels have a lot to make success on superspeedways.

“He is a head of the head for sure, because he and cliff and the whole team,” said Gordon. “But I’m sure they’ll understand it.”

Owen Larson, perhaps the hardest critic of his father, does not agree. Until her father improves, her eldest child believes that Daytona will always be a fight for Larson.

“He must try stronger,” said Owen Larson. And which specific area? “Probably written.”

Maybe Larson should follow his son’s advice before Nascar arrived in Talladega later this spring.

  • Daytona 500: Kyle Busch, Jeff Gordon Critique Joey Logano for “Dumb Move” late on the crash

Daytona Beach – Jeff Gordon interrupted the question.

“Did people have made stupid movements and stuff,” asked a journalist at the post-Daytona 500 press conference, “or is it right-“

“Joey did it,” said Gordon, causing laughter at Daytona International Speedway.

“Yeah, that’s right,” added William Byron.

They were not the only ones to feel this either.

With 14 laps to do when opening the NASCAR CUP series on Sunday, Joey Logano was stuck too close to the neighborhoods, by crushing the left back of a Ricky Stenhouse Jr. block and by triggering a big accident that collected Several of the best cars, including Kyle Busch, Ryan Blaney and Chase Elliott.

“It looks like the fastest car rushed to go to the wreckage,” said Busch, whose sequence without victory in major American races has reached 20 years. “Logano was by far the fastest car today. I saw a lot of laps, and he could do anything. Penske cars are very strong.

“We still have 20 laps to do, and he tries to go to the middle and make a hole that is not there and create chaos … You must know how width your racing car is to find a hole in which he will integrate. And he obviously doesn’t know it.

    Busch finished 34th.

Logano led 43 laps, the second plus behind Austin Cindric 59. He won stage 1. But due to the late chaos, he ranked 35th.

    Here’s how he explained.

“47 had an undecided moment, and that’s what sometimes causes you trouble, it’s when you have to choose one,” said Logano. “I went to the second way. I felt like I had to get there in front of the 47 there. I had to go to the second car of my row to have a chance to win the race. I saw my opportunity to descend in front of a Ford with Noah (Gragson). I felt like we could work well there.

“It just seemed that I was there. We had a late block. I raised. It seemed to go up. I returned there, then he returned. I started to lift again, and at that time, the record is so big that all the cars behind you simply push you. At this point, you are just for the trip.

    And the version of Stenhouse.

Stenhouse, the winner of 2023 Daytona 500, granted the 18th Sunday.

Byron avoided another big on the last round, gaping freely through the outside and in the victory path. He started the last ninth round.

“I don’t know what to do differently at the moment,” said Logano. “It’s easy to say, don’t take precedence. But not to do so don’t win your race. “”

  • Kyle Busch Slams Joey Logano, NASCAR After Crash finished Daytona 500 BID early

Kyle Busch had a lot of criticism to go around after his car was part of a major stack in Daytona 500 on Sunday.

Busch was taken in an accident from the start of Stade 2, which he blamed in Joey Logano.

“It looks like the fastest car rushed to go to the wreckage,” said Busch about Logano, whose bump with Ricky Stenhouse Jr. triggered the chain reaction. “We still have 20 laps to do and he tries to go to the middle and make a hole that is not there and just created chaos …

“You should know how width your racing car is to find a hole in which it will integrate. And he obviously does not know.”

But Busch, who has never won in his 20 departures at Daytona 500, saved his hardest words for Nascar, after the race officials denied his attempt to return on the track.

Busch’s Chevrolet n ° 8 seemed to avoid major wreck damage, although it needs to be towed in the garage area. After replacing the four tires, the car returned to the race under caution. But once Busch opposed yellow for more repairs, Nascar has brought it to the race.

Busch complained later, he did not have the opportunity to return to the track and at the speed. He went to social networks after not having obtained what he thought was a satisfactory explanation.

“The race has never returned to Green,” he wrote. “I don’t think they know their own rules or procedures.”

Nascar’s new damaged vehicle policy is designed to give teams a chance to make repairs and continue to run. However, officials said Busch had to reach a minimum speed immediately after the garage repairs ended. Under the rules, his visit to the stands for something other than fuel allowed him to be parked for the rest of the race.

Kyle Busch was one of the prerace favorites for the Daytona 500 of this year, even if he has never won the Nascar signature event in 20 departures.

The decision was perhaps even more frustrating for Busch in Daytona.

Despite 63 serial victories from the Nascar Cup (ninth of all time) and two seasonal championships, Busch never won the Daytona 500 in 20 attempts.
